A Certified Translation comes with a declaration or statement of accuracy which guarantees the accuracy of the translation from the original document. This statement in the Certified
Translation is signed by the certified or sworn translator.

Very often, a Certified Translation comes with a statement similar to:

a) “This translation accurately reflects the meaning of the attached original document.”

b) “This document is translated and certified as a true and accurate translation of the original document by…”

When a document is to be taken across borders from a country to another country, the Certified Translation may be notarized.

Certified Translation vs Notarised Translation

A Certified Translation can be notarized as well. However, the purpose of a Notarized Translation is different from a Certified Translation.

A Notarised Translation guarantees the identity of the translator’s signature and is validated by the Notary Public.

A Certified Translation guarantees the accuracy of the translation from the original document. Usually, the Notary public validates by witnessing the signature of the translator on the Certified Translation.

The origin of the original document which is needing the Certified Translation.

Is the original document requiring the Certified Translation from overseas or is it from Malaysia?

The final receiver of the Certified Translation.

a) If the final receiver of the Certified Translation is an overseas government department, then it depends on the rules set by the Foreign Embassy or representative in Malaysia.

For example, for US Citizenship and Immigration services (USCIS), the requirement of a Certified Translation means a complete English translation accompanied by a signed certification letter that includes a declaration or statement of accuracy.

Likewise, Canada, United Kingdom and New Zealand require such method of Certified Translation to be applied as well.

b) If the final receiver of the Certified Translation is an overseas institution or organization such as a professional body which does not require your Certified Translation to be endorsed by the Foreign Embassy or representative in Malaysia, then it depends on the rules set by the overseas institution or organisation.

c) If the final receiver of the Certified Translation is a Malaysian government department, then it depends on the rules set by the specific government department in Malaysia.

d) If the final receiver of the Certified Translation is a Malaysian institution e.g. a University, a school or private bank then it depends on the rules set by the specific institution in Malaysia.
